The Meridian Awards carpet: seven looks, and one that will get argued about
The Meridian carpet ran ninety minutes in unhelpful drizzle, which is why several of the wide shots you have seen are of umbrellas. Seven looks are worth writing about, and one of them caused a genuine problem for everyone trying to file.
The credit problem
A floor-length silver-grey column, worn by a first-time nominee, went out on at least four outlets with three different designer credits inside twenty minutes. The correct credit — an independent atelier, not the house two outlets named — took about forty minutes to establish, by which point the wrong version was already the one being copied.
This happens at every carpet. The fix is not faster reporting. The fix is waiting for the publicist’s sheet, which is dull and correct.
The rest of the seven
- A structured emerald suit that read as the best-cut thing on the carpet and will get almost no coverage because it photographs quietly.
- Two nearly identical black column gowns, worn within ten minutes of each other, which is the sort of coincidence that is not one.
- A vintage piece, correctly credited by its wearer on the way in, which saved everybody a repeat of the problem above.
- A cape that did not survive the drizzle and was gone by the room.
- The night’s only genuinely divisive look, which we are going to describe rather than score, because a number would be the whole story and it should not be.
What we do not do
No best-and-worst list. It is the easiest traffic on this site and we decided against it when we started, for the reasons on the sourcing page.
